NATIONAL HISTORY
During the fall of 1989, the foundation of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. was commenced by collegiate women who recognized the need to form an organization that provided empowerment to women of all cultural backgrounds. Her humble beginnings were built at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa where their vision was to create a network of academic and social support for Latina women. Under the guidance of Esther Materon-Arum and Mary Peterson, the vision came to fruition on April 9th, 1990, as the University of Iowa Panhellenic Council officially recognized the organization as a sorority.
Through the continued commitment and leadership of the founding mothers, the operation of Sigma Lambda Gamma has thrived on many college campuses and provides an avenue for educational excellence to women of many nationalities. Our members recognize the need for togetherness and support among women of varying cultures at the university level and they remain dedicated to the overall success of women in a global environment.
Sigma Lambda Gamma is a sisterhood of women who have chosen this affiliation as a manner to achieve personal development and awareness to the responsibility of community involvement for the betterment of our local, regional, national and global communities through the efforts of a network of close to 3,000 sorority members. Furthermore, we continue to be a pioneer in the Greek fraternal world through development of innovative programming initiatives, such as the Young Womens Leadership Program and Emotional Intelligence.

CHAPTER HISTORY
In 2009 a group of women gathered at the University of Wisconsin- Parkside to discuss the possibility of bringing Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Inc. to campus. The women were interested in bringing an organization that empowered women and respected all cultural backgrounds. They expressed their interest in bringing Sigma Lambda Gamma to campus. Their request was granted and policies and procedures were discussed. By the end of May, the interest group was officially named M.I.S.S. (Multicultural Individuals Striving for Success).
Throughout the summer and fall of 2009 M.I.S.S. held several meetings to discuss the procedures and requirements for petitioning for colony status. The interests participated in various fundraisers and completed a multitude of community service. The completed petition was sent and on March 17th, 2010, after much anticipation, the interest group became the University of Wisconsin- Parkside Colony. The newly established colony continued to meet, recruit, and fundraise during the spring and summer of 2010.
On November 7th, 2010 nine women: Crystil Knoll, Jocelin Cervantes, Jeannette Perez, Linda Vang, Yesenia Arjon, Elizabeth Zuniga, Valeria Salinas, Giovanna Gutierrez, and Ana Ruvalcaba were initiated as members of Sigma Lambda Gamma and became the Founding line of the UW- Parkside Colony.
These women worked hard and became a respected organization on campus and one of the most involved on campus. The following years, the UW- Parkside colony continued to work hard to gain chapter status and along the way eight new members joined the organization. They consisted of the five women from Alpha Line and three women from Beta Line. Throughout the summer of 2012 a committee was formed to work on getting all the necessary requirements for chapter petition. On August 1st, 2012 the chapter petition packet was sent to Headquarters. After much anticipation on August 16th, 2012 at 9:31 pm, the University of Wisconsin- Parkside Colony was recognized as the Zeta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma, becoming the 121st chapter of the sorority.

SIGMA LAMBDA GAMMA FACTS
PHILANTHROPIES
Sigma Lambda Gamma supports a variety of charitable organizations as a part of our community service commitment. As a national organization, we are proud to dedicate our philanthropic efforts to our national causes — the Sigma Lambda Gamma Education Foundation and Breast Cancer Awareness. As a chapter, we are also proud to dedicate our philanthropic efforts to the TRIO programs.
Breast Cancer Awareness
Our support of this cause comes in various avenues: from fundraising campaigns; educational workshops to create awareness; active participation in run/walk events; volunteer participation with organizations; or a combination of these forms. Through these various events we work hard to educate our community of the leading causes of death among women. |
Sigma Lambda Gamma Education Foundation
The Foundation supports the empowerment of all by providing our members with chapter grants and scholarships. You can help make a direct impact to the future of our members by donating, joining a Foundation Committee, becoming a Campaign champion, just to name a few examples. |
TRIO Programs
The Zeta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma also supports the TRIO programs for proactive stance on helping low-income and first generation students obtain necessary materials for success in higher education. These programs have become stepping stones for many members within our organization in continuing higher education. |
